Smith, Clare Sydney ( & Brown, Malcolm): The Golden Reign, The Story of My Friendship with Lawrence of Arabia, with a new Introduction by Malcolm Brown , Denby Dale, The Fleece Press 2004.Full cloth with Lawrence's initials blind-stamped on the upper board, limited to 500 copies. 205 x 265 mm, a squat landscape design used to display the mostly boat-shaped photographs, approx 200pp and 45 photographs. The Golden Reign was published in 1940 with a number of indifferently-printed photographs, including some of Lawrence and Clare Sydney Smith in the Biscuit, and it is fortunate that vintage prints survive; this new edition will include all those that can be traced, as well as a number of others. Because most have been copied directly from vintage prints it means the highest quality images will be included in this book, in contrast to the rather indifferent quality of those in the 1940 edition. This is the story of the friendship between Sydney Smith, his wife Clare and Lawrence. The period was a rare escape for Lawrence, when he could relax, largely sheltered from the intrusive press gaze; when he could enjoy close friendships and develop his love for mechanical things in the form of planes, boats and his motorbikes. This is another fine book from the Fleece Press. (Book ref. 131) £100.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Robin Doughty Fine Books (member PBFA) , are shown in the right-hand column. |
