MENKEN (Adah Isaacs): Infelicia. , London, Paris, New York: no publisher, 1868;pp.v, 141. Engr. portrait frontis and numerous engr. head and tailpieces. Orig. green cloth bevelled boards, a.e.g. Neat restoration of corner of contents leaf. Final gathering slack, else a reasonably good copy. Dedicated to Charles Dickens with facsimile of Dickens's letter to her accepting her dedication. Impassioned verses and poems in prose, with much use of exclamation marks! The author (1835-1868) was an American actress and poet. There is a useful outline of her life in Kunitz and Haycraft's 'American Authors 1600-1900'. It is not quite clear that this is the true first edition, as NSTC to 1870 lists Imprint 1 as published in London only. The first imprint listed as published in London, Paris and New York is Imprint 5, dated 1869. This issue clearly predates that and is not listed. (Book ref. 2040) £45.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Nineteenth Century Books , are shown in the right-hand column. |
