A good, sound set though there is pervasive mild foxing, Vol.1 has ink notes on the front end-papers and Vol.2 has red ink notes affecting one chapter only. Sutherland (1852-1902) was an Australian by adoption (born in Glasgow), a journalist and man of letters of wide interests, who became Registrar of the University of Melbourne. As he explains in his preface, 'full half of the book is a detailed expansion of [Darwin's] Descent of Man'. The first volume is biological in approach while the second is more directly philosophical.
