Orig. green cloth w. decorative gilt spines and red title-pieces which appear to be a glazed paper overlay, intended to resemble leather. Top edges gilt. The paper title-labels have chipped away at the head of each spine with some loss to first line of each title. Inner hinges cracking, but the volumes themselves sound. An interesting compilation, published posthumously in Leigh Hunt's case and simultaneously in England and America. It includes a 91-page 'Essay on the cultivation, history, and varieties of the species of poem called the Sonnet', a thirty-six page essay on 'American Sonnets and Sonneteers', an anthology of English sonnets, a collection of American sonnets, and finally a separate section on 'Female Sonneteers of America'. Female Sonneteers of England are not subject to this apartheid but in with the men, including Charlotte Smith, Anna Seward, Helen Maria Williams, Mrs Mary Darby Robinson, Mrs Felicia Dorothea Hemans, the Hon.
