A distinguished naval officer and physician, Kane was stationed in the Orient, Africa, and Europe, served as medical officer with the Grinnell expedition in search of John Franklin, and led the second Grinnell expedition in 1853. This last undertaking failed to discover information regarding Franklin, but gleaned important material concerning Eskimos, the Arctic, and a route to the North Pole.
