Hall, Charles F., Nourse, J. E.: Narrative of the Second Arctic Expedition Made by Charles F. Hall: His Voyage to Repulse Bay, Sledge Journeys to the Straits of Fury and Hecla and to King William's Land, and Residence Among the Eskimos During the Years 1864-1869 , Washington, D.C., Government Printing Office, 1879.

1st Edition; Edited. by Prof. J. E. Nourse. [8], I, 644pp. 2 steel-engraved portraits, 72 wood-engravings, photo-engravings and heliotypes (some full-page), 12 maps (mostly folding or double-page), one large linen folding map in rear pocket, 8 sketches by Innuits. Brown cloth covers (with gilt titling and original olive covers with gilt vignette depicting sledging on front cover) pasted to front and back. Ex Library with library bookplate and discrete embossed stamps as expected. Pages age toned and some foxing, mainly to portraits (as usual). Note: ORIGINAL CIRCUMPOLAR LINEN MAP WITH EXPLORERS' NAMES in rear pocket. This expedition was supported by private subscription and was undertaken to search for the records of the Franklin Expedition and to promote and benefit the cause of geography, navigation, natural history and science. From winter quarters in the Wagner Inlet and Repulse Bay regions, Hall's four man party explored the shores north and west from Melville Peninsula to King William Island, 1864-69. Includes detailed information on the Igloolik Eskimos of Repulse Bay, information on Franklin relics, on the fish and game of region, the auroras, traveling conditions, etc. There are appendices on astronomy, meteorological observations, geology by Emerson, Hall's conversations with the Innuits, demand for whale and seal oil in the manufacture of jute. Eight of the maps, sketches of coast-lines, were drawn by Innuits. This is a record of Hall's 2nd Arctic expedition to recover the logs and other artifacts of the doomed Franklin expedition, collect additional information regarding the native peoples and resources, as well as further the detail and accuracy of earlier surveys of the region. Of particular interest is Hall's documentation of earlier explorations including Frobisher's colony. [Arctic Bibliography: 6486]. Very Good (Book ref. 2270)  £175.00
