A.B. 6795. Hayes, who had been a member of Kane's last expedition, led this effort to extend Kane's exploration in the Smith Sound region. He was a strong believer in the "open polar sea" - that is that the Arctic Ocean was open and free of ice above latitude 80 or so. Narrative of the Hayes Arctic Exploring Expedition to extend northward the exploration of the Second Grinell Expedition and to make scientific observations and collections. It describes the voyage along the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island to Smith Sound, sledge journeys to 82 degrees and the native peoples.
