Full Title: The Last Voyage of Capt. Sir John Ross, R.N. Knt. To The Arctic Regions; for the Discovery of a North West Passage; performed in the years 1829-30-31-32- and 33. To which is prefixed An Abridgement of the former Voyages of Captns, Ross, Parry, & Other Celebrated Navigators to the Northern Latitudes. Compiled from Authentic Information and Original Documents, transmitted by William Light, Purser's steward to the expedition. Illustrated by Engravings from Drawings Taken on the Spot. 1st Edition:(2/3rd printing?) ii,716,[1], engraved vignette title page, dictionary of the Esqimaux language, appendix. Brown, half morocco boards. B. 7529. The narrative (p.100-694) is apparently based upon statements by Mr. Light, of whom Captain (Sir John) had been highly critical (in his biography of the Victory's crew, 1835). The book includes many small incidents and details, particularly concerning the meals of the expedition, and the contacts with the Eskimos, and Eskimo customs, with extensive derogatory references to Captain Ross. The first edition imprint reads "published for the proprietors by John Saunders" Covers very worn, spine missing, contents have occasional staining, especially to page edges, rebound for previous owner and owners bookplate (Hugh Cecil Lonsdale) pasted onto verso front cover. (MISSING the other engraved plates and folding table and 44p supplement, "On the Position of The North Magnetic Pole". ) Although missing the illustations and table plus the appendix this is a lovely authentic example of this title once owned by an explorer in his own right (From Wikipedia " Lord Lonsdale was an avid sportsman...known by some as "England's greatest sporting gentleman".....In 1888, Lonsdale set out to reach the North Pole, nearly dying before reaching Kodiak, Alaska in 1889 and returning to England.... He enjoyed foxhunting, serving as Master of The Quorn from 1893 to 1898. He was also a keen football fan, and was chairman of Arsenal Football Club for a brief period in 1936 (having previously been a club director). He later became the club's Honorary President....He was known as the Yellow Earl for his penchant for the colour. He was a founder and first president of the Automobile Association (AA) which adopted his livery...Lord Lonsdale was the subject of a biography, The Yellow Earl." Fair condition.
