Brown leather boards ruled in gilt, Gilt titling and decoration to spine, eps and page edges marbled. Manual and instructions prepared for the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-76, under Captain Sir George Strong Nares, on board HMS "Alert" and "Discovery" aimed at attempting to reach the North Pole from northern Ellesmere Island . Includes essays by a wide range of contemporary experts. Despite extensive preparations (of which this volume is emblematic) the expedition had to be cut short due to a serious outbreak of scurvy. Previous owners stamp (Henry Chichester Hart) on title page), occasional underlining and very neat comments in margin, mainly in the plant section by Hart. (1847-1908) (Not surprising as he was a botanist and was one of the candidates for the expedition) Shelfware, bumped, slight rubbing, contents clean. Very scarce. Very Good.
