NMM Cat, Vol 2, Pt 1, entry 805: McClintock's first Arctic service was with Sir James Clark Ross on his second expedition in search of a North West Passage (1848-49). He accompanied Ommanery's 1850-51 espedition as first lieutenant of the Assistance. During this expedition he made a sledge journey of seven hundred and sixty miles in eighty days. He commanded the Intrepid in Belcher's 1852-54 expedition, the last of those officially sent out to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin. In 1857, at the request of Lady Franklin, McClintock sailed in the Fox to search for Franklin again. The Fox returned in 1859, having found many relics (including a written record) of its fate. In 1872 McClintock became admiral-superintendent of Portsmouth dockyard, and in 1879 was commander-in-chief, West Indies. Shelfware, covers faded, bumped.
