Colonel Arthur C. Borton (retired) who kept a diary of family news and experiences throughout WW1, covering events at the family seat at Cheveney in Hunton, near Maidstone in Kent, as well as the exploits of his two sons, Bosky (Arthur, the eldest) and Biffy (Amyas), in the various theatres of the war. Bosky joined the Royal Flying Corps as an observer, crashed and broke his neck in March 1915 and was invalided out. He then volunteered for the Royal Naval Air Service, was accepted and served with their armoured cars at Gallipoli winning the DSO and VC. Biffy started the war as a Lieutenant in the Black Watch serving with the Royal Flying Corps, was seriously wounded flying on the Western Front, also winning the DSO.
