Generalstab des Heeres [German General Staff]: Nordwest-Frankreich Stadtdurchfahrtplane [Town plans of North West France] , Berlin: [Department for War Maps and Surveying], 1940.8 inches x 6 inches (21 cms x 15 cms). 116 town plans of North West France, mainly printed both sides. Most town plans are printed either one to a page or two to a page; some are large double-page fold-out plans. Internally very clean, original cloth covers issued by the Wehrmacht in 1940 a touch stained and fraying a little at spine. Lacking the original folding 'key' map of the area showing the locations of the towns - a good facsimile copy as above is provided here. A pleasant copy of the first 1940 edition of the German army's atlas of town plans in North West France, published in Berlin by the German Department for War Maps and Surveying (Abteilung fur Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen) within the German General Staff (Generalstab des Heeres). These town plans were produced "For Official Use Only!" (Nur fur den Dienstgebrauch!) as part of the German preparatory work for their forthcoming war plans for Europe. This collection of German wartime town plans, most of which have never been republished, have immense historical significance as surviving remnants of World War Two German Wehrmacht material. The maps also have particular resonance for troops and units involved in the British, American, Canadian and Allied forces landings in Normandy on D-Day in June 1944 covering as it does many of the towns through which battles were fought between the Allies and the retreating German forces. Anyone in the land forces in Normandy and North West France in 1944/45 will have had to fight his way through the actual streets shown in many of these towns. (Price includes postage UK) (Book ref. as-1969) £85.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Unique or Rare , are shown in the right-hand column. |
