Vol I has some wear to corners and external hinges, and light wear to base of spine, but binding intact. B/w frontispiece + illustrations, with tissue guards, in both vols. Bookplate of the writer and biographer George Somes Layard (G.S. Layard) on each front pastedown. Tipped in to the front of each volume are undated cuttings from The Westminster Gazette of articles (one per volume) by Layard on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, in which Hunt was, of course, prominent. Layard also wrote a study of another eminent Victorian artist, "Life and Letters of Charles Keene of Punch", and also tipped in to the front of Volume I is a letter from Hunt to Layard (dd Oct 7. 1891) containing some reminiscences of Keene, who had died the previous January. The letter contains many amendments and emendments (in Hunt's own hand), and his text fills almost every square inch of both sides of the page, written both horizontally and vertically.
