Hardback. Very Good. Illustrated heavy dk green boards; a few small marks; corners slightly bumped; stitched binding a little loose; gilt illustration + titling still very bright. Occasional spotting to front pastedown and endpaper - rest of pp clear. Colour ad for "Stickphast Paste" tipped in to front endpaper; 4 pp publr's catalogue at rear. Ad for Phil May's ABC laid in at rear (possibly, this was a page that came loose - if so, the rest of the binding is secure, if a little frail). B/w plate pasted in opposite contents page; colour plate tipped in on verso of contents page. Bookplate of the writer and biographer George Somes Layard (G.S. Layard) on front pastedown; tipped in to one of the front endpapers is a short, undated, hand-written letter (in envelope) from Phil May to Layard - the envelope, however, is postmarked Jy 21 [18]99.
