Bell, Charles Essays on the Anatomy of Expression in Painting , London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1806.Hardback. Good. Dk brown leather boards, rather worn. Some cloth has been roughly stuck over the original backstrip (which is partly visible underneath); binding mostly intact, but a little frail - half title page loose. Occasional spotting. 7 b/w plates + illustrations in text. This book was the property of the late Victorian writer and biographer George Somes Layard, whose bookplate is on the verso of the front endpaper, and it has an interesting Charles Dickens connection: underneath the bookplate is written, in Layard's hand: "This book belonged to Robert Seymour, the first illustrator of Pickwick, from whose son I bought it. The pencil notes and sketches are by R.S. himself. GSL". And there are, indeed, a number of pencilled notes in the text, as well as some sketches on the front and rear pastedowns, in addition to Seymour's signature on the front endpaper. We can surmise, perhaps, that this was very much a working copy for Seymour.; 4to (10" x 12"); 186 + pblr's cat pages (Book ref. 16704) £450.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Walden Books , are shown in the right-hand column. |
