A very good copy, handsomely bound in full calf with gilt rules to edges and gilt decoration and title label to spine. Marbled endpapers and edges. Neat inscription to front endpaper. Label a little marked but still a very attractive copy. Historian Dr Chris Bassford records that Colonel John Mitchell was commissioned in the British army in 1803. He served in the West Indies, the Walcheren expedition of 1809, and then served Wellington in the Peninsula from 1810 to 1812. In 1813 he joined the quartermaster general’s staff, served in the campaign of 1814 in the Low Countries, and joined in the occupation of Paris. Owing to his great linguistic abilities, he was frequently employed by Wellington in negotiations with the allies. On half-pay from 1826, Mitchell was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1835 and to major-general in 1854. He wrote profusely on military subjects.
