Gleig (1796-1888) was a divinity student who abandoned his studies to join Wellington’s army in Spain for the closing stages of the Peninsular War. He was present at the Battle of Toulouse and this autobiographical account gives a very vivid picture of what that involved. Gleig went on to fight in the war with America and wrote a number of books on military matters. The Subaltern is a novel closely based on his own experiences.
