Dr W Scheithauer Translated from the German by Chas Salter , Shale Oils and Tars

Dr. W. Scheithauer. Translated from the German by Chas Salter.: Shale Oils and Tars, Scott, Greenwood, London, 1913.

8.5 inches x 6 inches (22 cms x 14 cms). viii+183 pages, 70 illustrations and 4 diagrams. A nice copy with scarcely a blemish of the scarce 1st edition in English. An important historical comparison of the methods employed in the Scottish shale oil industry with the Saxon-Thuringian mineral oil industry of Central Germany prior to the first World War. The shale oil industry that arose from James Young's original 1850 distillation plant at Bathgate was for many years unique to Scotland. From the outset, competition from cheap imported petroleum bred commercial and technical innovation, and many processes developed in Scotland were subsequently applied throughout the world's oil industry. In short, this is an important record of Scottish industrial history and its contribution to the development of the worldwide oil industry during the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
