Renault, Mary The Charioteer , London: New English Library, 1977.

Reprint. Paperback. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall 0450031322 A moving and compassionate handling of the difficult subject of homosexuality introduces Mary Renault to her readers in a new genre. Here is a contemporary novel- with sex deviation as the motivating theme, and the tensions of World War II in England as the setting. But one's interest is focussed on the three central characters, youths who grow into knowledge of their own deviation at the levels of their characters and upbringing. Laurie we follow through from early childhood to maturity, at high points of his life - his last contact with his father; his violent reaction to the charges made against the head prefect at his school; the aftermath of Dunkirk and long months of hospitalization. He is slow to recognize his problem for what it is and naive in his ignorance of the appalling peripheral aspects of a studiedly self-conscious group; he is idealistic in his conviction that he can make his choice between the two men he loves. There is Andrew, young, a Quaker and a conscientious objector, whom he meets in the hospital to which the CO's are assigned for menial jobs. And finally there is Ralph, the boy he had defended at school, met again under trying circumstances. There is the dual conflict:- the conflict of ideas, and the conflict of taking a place in a hostile world. While many readers will find the central theme a difficult one, at no point does the flawless handling cater to morbid curiosity or descend to shock techniques. (Book ref. 032976 )  £ 4.00
