Froude, J A, Two Chiefs of Dunboy or An Irish Romance of the Last Century

Froude, J. A: Two Chiefs of Dunboy or An Irish Romance of the Last Century. , London: Longmans Green and Co. 1891.

456 pp. hardback, red boards with a gilt marginal line to the boards, gilt spine titling and the gilt device of the publisher's Silver Library, decorative endpapers. Set in south west Cork in 1750-98 and first published in 1889 this novel embodied Froude's views on Ireland. His thesis was that if England had from the first striven to replace the hopeless Celt with Anglo Saxon and Protestant colonists she would have avoided her subsequent troubles and all would have been well. The Irish characters stand as a powerful indictment of Ireland and the Irish as seen by Froude.
