Quigley, Hugh; Adam, Robert M (photos) The Highlands of Scotland , London: Batsford, January 1949Fourth edition. Orange cloth, 118 bw photos, col frontis, foldout map Pagination: viii, 120. This book provides, in superbly illustrated form, exactly the treatise for which the intelligent visitor to the Highlands has been searching, and searching in vain. Mr Quigley is no stickler for precedent, and if some of the divisions into which he groups the Highland country may seem unorthodox at first sight, they will be found to constitute an extremely advantageous arrangement from the point of view of the modern visitor, whether he invade this region in a Rolls Royce or on foot, with rucksack and stick. The author is equally at home in the wilds of Wester Ross or the lovely hill and water scenery of Kintyre and Arran; amid the bleak heights of the Cairngorms or the tenderer scenery of the Lower Grampians.<P>He is magnificently served on the pictorial side by Mr Robert M Adam, to whom no reader of The Scotsman, or collector of its delightful annual calendar, will ne introduction, for he stands supreme among photographers of the Scottish scene. There are over 100 photographs, mostly previously unpublished, and we believe that few people who glance through them will be able to deny the quick urge that we felt ourselves, to pack a bag, lock up the office, catch the night train and wake up, far from the fret and uncertainty of modern life, amid the majestic solitudes of the Scottish Highlands.
