Burnett R G , Christ Down East

Burnett. R.G.: Christ Down East. , London. Jarrolds. No date.

1st edn. Hardback in d/w. 160pp. Red cloth boards with black titles to spine. Minute sunning to extrems, otherwise VG. In G d/w with chipping, small splits and internal repairs. Overall an acceptable copy of a fascinating book. This is a book of adventures in the slumland of East London. It portrays the life of the overcrowded tenements and alleys of Stepney, Limehouse, and Bethnal Green. Humour and pathos and heroic endeavour are interwoven in the many stories of men and women who have triumphed over difficulties and planted a little of Heaven in a Hell of squalor and misery. There are new tales of the sharp-witted gutter-arabs, glimpses of tragedy and humour among the coloured seamen, poignant revelations of the struggles of East End women, and a description of the wonderful healing work performed in some of the worst slums by a group of Scottish women doctors. (Book ref. 3786 )  £ 25.00
