RHODES, G.M. The Nine Circles of the Hell of the Innocent. Described from the Reports of the Presiding Spirits. . With a Preface by Frances Power Cobbe. , London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co, 1892.

8vo., xv + (i) + 163 + (1)pp., marginal rubrics in red, original black and red cloth gilt, lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine, a little wear here and there but a very good copy, with the (cancelled) bookplate of a religious institution on front pastedown. First edition. Rare: not in NUC. An horrific anthology of graphic and unexpurgated descriptions of cruel treatment of animals and vivisection experiments. Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904), the Dublin born philanthropist, 'of ample proportions' as DNB has it, was a central high-profile contributor to the public outrage over the exposure of what vivisectionists were doing in the name of science. In the Preface to the Rhodes anthology, written from Hengwrt, Dolgelly, where she and her friend Miss Lloyd had moved to in 1884, Cobbe compares the vivisection nightmare to Dante's Inferno. In February 1885 Frances Cobbe had been awarded an annuity of 100 by her anti-vivisectionist friends. In 1893 she left the National Anti-Vivisection Society, of which she was a founder in 1875 and had been joint secretary (until 1884), to form a more thorough-going body, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection. The Nine Circles of the Hell of the Innocent Cobbe calls a 'sickening book' which illustrates 'the most fantastic and excruciating torture'. Bound in original green cloth with a red band across the covers and spines with gilt titles. Very good . Scans available. (Book ref. 16158 )  £ 90.00
