The Rare Book Shelf

Wilde, Oscar De Profundis , London: Methuen and Co., 1905.

First Edition. Very Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall Second Edition Bound in the publishers original blue cloth binding with gilt title lettering and decoration to front board and spine. This is the second edition published in 1905 after the first edition published in February, 1905. This is duly stated as such on the verso of the title page. The 40 page Methuen advert to rear of book is dated March 1905. Top edge dyed gilt as published. Gilt title lettering remains sharp and legible. The design in gilt to the front board by Charles Ricketts of what appears to be a dove fleeing the confines of prison bars makes this thoughtful volume all the more poignant. The 151 pages remain in good condition for their age with no inscriptions. Preface by Robert Ross. Book sits solid and square with all hinges remaining strong. Light signs of handling and slight rubbing to the edges of cloth binding otherwise this is indeed a bright copy of a volume penned during the days of Oscar Wilde's imprisonment. Photographs of the book are available on request. Very early editions of this Oscar Wilde title such as this one are becoming scarce in this condition. A tidy example. (Book ref. 000656 )  £ 94.50
