Washington, Peter Madame Blavatsky's Baboon : Theosophy and the Emergence of the Western Guru , London: Secker and Warburg, 1993.

First Edition. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall 0436564181 FIRST EDITION This is the first impression of the first edition. A comprehensive book detailing the emergence of the West's fascination and eventual participation into the mysterious spiritual world of the East, particularly the phenomena of Madame Blavatsky. The main theme here is the Eastern Guru and indeed many are widely discussed, including Krishnamurti, Gurdjieff and other figures of perhaps a more minor nature e.g. Steiner, Leadbetter and Annie Besant. This is a most fascinating book on this subject which lends great ammunition for both sides of the argument regarding authentic teachers with a true message and power or merely clever charlatans. Black and white photographs of the above prominent figures support the text throughout. The book is in fine condition with no faults of note as is the dustwrapper which retains publishers printed price on front inside flap. Dustwrapper now protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. A very knowledgable and interesting read on this seemingly endless subject of Eastern spiritual influence.
