LAWRENCE, G. A. Sword And Gown [a novel]. , Parker 1859.

First Edition, gilt cloth. C.pp316 with 4pp integral advts, slight wear and cloth lightly marked, a very good copy of a scarce and fragile book. Endpaper signed R. J. Aldersey[?] 1859. Uncommon. 'A tale of bigamy and the Crimea (climaxing inevitably on the Charge of the Light Brigade), remains enjoyable' [Sutherland]. Second novel by the leading exponent of the 'muscular' novel. Lawrence went to Rugby School where he was profoundly affected by Arnold's new public school ethos : therafter he went in for unconventional novels with sadistic heroes. See Wolff noting that his half-dozen Lawrence titles, most in no more than 'respectable' condition, had all been 'painfully assembled'. Wolff 3977 [and Book Collector 1965]. 'I would not be without him if only because for several decades every writer with the slightest sense of humour tried his hand at a parody. It is the turn now of the psychoanalytic critics, who will one day discover Lawrence with cries of joy' [Wolff]. (Book ref. 3510 )  £ 145.00
