SHERIDAN, R. B. : William Smyth. Memoir Of Mr Sheridan [by William Smyth]. , Leeds, for J. Cross 1840.

First Edition, original drab cloth typically faded, some slight wear, with elegantly gilt-titled cartouche. Sm.8vo, c.pp80 a.e.g., lacks front free endpaper. Armorial bookplate of Christopher Henry Oldham of Scaife. A fragile little book. 'Privately printed & now rare' [DNB]. Smyth was a Cambridge professor who, as tutor to Sheridan's son 1793-1806, also saw a great deal of Sheridan himself. His relations with the great man he described as 'one eternal insult, mortification & disappointment', and his Memoir is written with mingled pity, humour and anger at Sheridan's eccentricities. Dedicated to Miss Cotton of Madingley, Cambridge : apparently the sister of the famously mad coach-driving Sir St Vincent Cotton. (Book ref. 4742 )  £ 150.00
