MULOCK, Dinah Maria, Mrs Craik. King Arthur : Not A Love Story [a novel]. , Macmillan 1886.

First Edition, red-brown gilt cloth. C.pp337 uncut & with final advt leaf. Volume slightly cocked, light wear to lower hinge and spine bit dulled, stout copy of an uncommon book. Scarce: Mulock's late last work. Story of adoption : 'Founded on facts which happened a good many years ago in America; the adopting parents were American; the child died young ... The world, voluble enough on the duties of children to parents, is strangely silent on the far more momentous ones of parents to children'. Mulock, a proponent of women's rights, was herself a non-typical Victorian woman : a successful author [her most famous novel John Halifax, Gentleman was published in 1857], she remained single until her late thirties : soon after her marriage she adopted an abandoned baby. Not in Sadleir who lists 13 other Mulock titles. Mulock's last work, published the year before her death : none of Sadleir's titles is later than 1872 [bar the posthumous collection of magazine stories Half Caste]. Wolff 4997. See NUC listing 2 copies only. (Book ref. 5040 )  £ 75.00
