With Phillpotts Autograph Letter To The Publisher.* Quarter parchment lettered & decorated in gilt, grey paper boards. Endpaper with previous owner's neat little bookplate : and with neat and appropriately romantic inscription. Large folio, c.pp126 t.e.g., others uncut, parchment spine just lightly spotted on the rear cover, lower corners just nudged, else a fine bright & fresh copy of a very vulnerable book : this copy preserved in such excellent condition thanks to a very handsome custom-made folding box in striking Italian patterned paper. Every page with wide decorative border : and with 4 tipped-in colour plates by Frank Brangwyn of lightly erotic scenes of fawns with female nudes. Edition De Luxe on hand-made paper : limited to 350 copies numbered & signed by Phillpotts and by Frank Brangwyn. With pictorial half-title & pictorial title printed in burnt umber : with every page within a very wide decorative floral border also in burnt umber : and with 4 tipped-in colour plates all by Frank Brangwyn. With tipped-in Autograph Letter of c.28 lines from Eden Phillpotts signed EP thus : 'My dear Sirs, I know not how I can write for the moment a short story. My wits are all in a bad way. It occurs to me this humorous poem with adequate pictures would make a pleasant change ... Suggest I may take it instead of the short story. I should think 20 wouldn't be too much. It is an absolute novelty and would make delightful pictures by Wiguelin ...'. The publisher has stamped the letter 'Received 14 Jul 08' and has annotated the letter thus : 'I am going to try to get to The Moor in a day or two if possible.' and added the destination 'Eltham, Torquay'. A subsequent annotation - firmly underlined twice - states 'The Fauns'. (Book ref. 8198 )  £ 350.00
