Gosse was a writer & bibliographer of books about Pirates : he was also the son of literary critic Edmund Gosse [who wrote the classic Father & Son about his own father the naturalist P. H. Gosse]. He would have been interested in Temple's Miscellanea for the many references to the maritime powers and dispositions of various nations which it contains. Temple was a major statesman and a leading literary stylist who for many years employed Jonathan Swift as his secretary. His essay on the Cure Of Gout, one of the earliest on the subject and 'one of the most entertaining of Temple's essays [DNB], was based on his own painful big toe. Part 1 of Temple's Miscellanea was published a dozen years before the following parts and is complete in itself. It was first published as a stand-alone volume in 1680. (Book ref. 8993 )  £ 125.00
