HOOD, Thomas. The Dream Of Eugene Aram, the murderer. [A Poem] With designs by W. Harvey engraved on wood by Branston & Wright. [With an Explanatory Preface by Hood : and the text of The Defence Of Eugene Aram]. , Charles Tilt 1831.

First Separate Edition, later quarter scarlet calf gilt over scarlet cloth sides. Sm.8vo, c.pp32 with vignette title and final vignette. And with 6 full-page plates [just lightly age-dusty around the margins]. Binding merest trifle scuffed, an excellent copy. The case of the notorious 18thC scholar-murderer 'took all Europe by storm' [Sutherland] when it was novelised by Bulwer Lytton in 1832. Despite a defence of 'extraordinary ability' [it is reprinted here], Eugene Aram was executed for murder. His language studies - Chaldee, Hebrew, Arabic, and Celtic - were of great but unnoticed importance and, things being other than they were, he 'might have advanced the study of comparative philology by fifty years' [DNB]. This is the First Separate Edition of Hood's poem : originally published in The Gem. This copy with striking horned-Bacchus or Satyr bookplate [c.1910] of Percival Hinton : and another neat little modern booklabel. (Book ref. 9078 )  £ 75.00
