ABBOT, Charles, Lord Colchester : edited John Rickman. Speeches In Communicating Thanks of The House of Commons to Military Commanders 1807 - 1816. With a Biographical Memoir and Appendix. Not Published. , London, Not Published, printed by Hansard 1829.

Privately Printed and Not Published.* Original delicate reddish linen, with double green morocco labels. Title-page + ppiv + 295, delicate linen binding faded to tan around backstrip, linen worn along hinges but boards secure, internally clean and crisp. A good copy of a scarce book. Scarce. Privately Printed by Hansard for John Rickman, secretary to Charles Abbot, Lord Colchester. 'These short speeches [given by Charles Abbot in his role as Speaker of the Commons] ... thanking admirals and generals for their exploits during the great war, are models of dignified panegyric' [DNB]. The speeches are arranged chronologically by battle - from Copenhagen, Corunna, Talavera, to Waterloo and the Capture of Paris - and include the replies of the Generals. The very substantial 180pp Appendix comprises extracts taken from the London Gazettes Extraordinary which describe the course of each battle. Charles Abbot, a reforming MP, was from 1802-1816 the highly respected Speaker of the House Of Commons, considered 'among the most distinguished men who have ever occupied the chair'. This copy very appropriately inscribed 'Glencairn Cartor [??] from the Dean of Christchurch [Oxford]. October 1829'. Abbot had been MP for the University of Oxford until his death in 1829. And as a student Abbot, whose step-brother was the Utilitarian Jeremy Bentham, had also attended Christ Church College in Oxford. (Book ref. 9120 )  £ 150.00
