DOUBLE Crown Club : 42nd Dinner : Menu 1934. Bill Of Fare ... Chairman Dr John Johnson. Mr James Guthrie will read a paper on The Hand Printer And His Work. , [1934].

Landscape 8vo booklet c. 20 x 16 cms. Front cover with photolitho illustration in black & white of music and book leaves : p3 with menu &c : p5 with music & song : inside back cover with colophon, fine. A particularly elaborate production by Hubert Foss : the manuscript text & music reproduced by lithograph : the covers with acetate overlays : and the sewing at the centre with a tucked-in printed slip stating : 'The words of the round [ie. song] by Daniel George : Music by Hubert Foss'. James Guthrie ran the Pear Tree Press, one of the earliest and most idiosyncratic of English private presses. Guthrie's interest was art rather than typography - he first turned to printing as a pictorial medium for the blocks which he was cutting - and many of his books were issued, as here, with manuscript-style texts.
