Second Edition, green cloth lettered in gilt and illustrated in contrasting green, stoutly rebacked retaining original backstrip, new endpapers. Thick 8vo [binding c.20.5 x 14 cms], c.pp472 + 24pp advts, all edges of text block gilt, binding a little rubbed and dulled at corners and edges, backstrip dulled, a stout copy. With illustrations in the text : and with mounted permanent Woodbury-type frontispiece : and 3 full-page engravings : and also 12 colour plates. Francis Heath was born in Totnes, and all the fern scenes that he describes are drawn from Devon - the Lyn valleys, Torbay &c &c. First published the same year : 'The First Edition was exhausted within a week or two of its publication : half of the Second Edition was ordered before the day of issue' [Preface to 4th Edition].
