PHILIPS, Ambrose : John Sparrow Association. Pastorals by Mr Philips. , London, printed and sold by H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side 1710.John Sparrow Copy.* First Separate Edition, later marbled paper wrappers. 8vo [binding c. 17.5 x 11 cms], pp24 a little browned, cut close at the top just clipping a couple of page numbers, else a very good copy of a fragile piece. § Blank prelim signed in ink by John Sparrow, the notable bibliophile and Warden of All Souls, Oxford. And with his pencil note on the endpaper thus : 'The first separate edition of Ambrose Philips' Pastorals, four of which first appeared in Fenton's Oxford & Cambridge Miscellany [1707 or 1709] and six in the 1709 Tonson's Miscellany (though the order is changed in T. to 2, 3, 1, 4 and the text is changed). This reprints Tonson of course'. This is the 'First separate edition, unauthorized ... one of the numerous piracies of contemporary verse committed by Henry Hills who, notwithstanding, had been printer by appointment to Cromwell, Charles II, James II and (with Thomas Newcomb) to Queen Anne.
