First Edition thus, stiff vellum boards with striking gilt design by Margaret Armstrong. Tall 8vo [binding c. 23.5 x 16 cms] with all edges gilt, backstrip and edges of binding lightly dusty, else an excellent copy of a vulnerable book. Endpaper with neat pencil inscription 'To Kitty from Frank. Ap 6/09'. Rare Limited Edition : this is No 15 of 100 copies only printed on Japanese vellum. The limitation notice mistakenly calls for the book to be signed, but the 100 copies were all issued unsigned. A lovely romantic fin-de-siecle book, in a striking edition binding with the MA monogram of Margaret Armstrong, one of the outstanding woman binding designers of the period. Atmospherically illustrated with 6 full-page tissue-guarded sepia plates, and 20 pages with large woodcut headpieces and page decorations all printed in black and various single colours, and with similarly illustrated half-title, title, contents and colophon leaves, all by Frederick Simpson Coburn, the important Canadian artist and book illustrator.
