Lonsdale was born in Scotland in 1829, and seems to have worked only briefly as a photographer : from 1863 - 1864 in his Fleet Street studio, and from 1864 - 1869 at 54 Chancery Lane. He also had a brief career as a portrait painter 1866 - 1867. Lonsdale died at St Pancras in London in 1897. Photographs by Lonsdale appear to be scarce : the Victoria & Albert Museum locates only one, an 1860s portrait of Alice Marriott, the celebrated actress-manager of Sadlers Wells best-known for her role as Hamlet.
