Central Gilt Armorial Bearing on fronts. Narrow decorative Gilt Border to fronts & backs and Gilt Hatching on edges. Endpapers and All Page Edges Marbled. Vol I includes Translator's Preface and Introductory Note by Dr. Mommsen. The History commences with "the Earliest Migrations into Italy" and "The Settlements of the Latins"; Vol II continues with Pyrrhus the Macedonian and Hannibal & the Punic Wars; Vol III includes the Revolution and the Gracchi; Vol IV includes Mithridates, Cinna & Sulla, & Pompeius; Vol V includes Pompeuis & Caesar, Death of Crassus and the Old Republic and New Monarchy. Also Chapters on Religion, Culture, Literature & Art, Science, Agrigulture etc in each volume. Vol I hasd a Fold-Out Military Map of Italy. Volumes individually Paginated; Vol I, 508 Pages; Vol II, 525; Vol III, 547 Pages; Vol IV, 518 and Vol V, 594 Pages including Index. 7 1/2" Tall. Some wear to leather, mainly around spine and some areas of darkened colour on fronts & backs (mainly at the bottom, see photos). Small Holmes Prize Inscription on blank preliminary page in Vol V, no other inscriptions. Pages and Map in very good, clean condition. Set weighs 4 Kilos so Shipping outside UK will be extra.
