"Dear irs, As you are no doubt aware, the proposed social security scheme, as it was outlined in the Beveridge Report, included, as essential to a comprehensive health service, a national dental service. But in that report and that of the subsequently set up Inter-departmental Committee on Dentistry, certain difficulties peculiar to dental treatment were recognised and stressed. Chief among these was the widespread reluctance on the part of the public to demand regular care and inspection of their teeth resulting in so many people only seeking the dentist's aid when pain compels them. This apathy to the proper care of their teeth by so great a proportion of the community is attributable, in most cases, to ignorance of the evil effects -- even dangerous con--sequences - of neglecting oral hygiene and the benefits resulting from systematic tooth-care. In a word, the principle of prevention is disregarded to the serious detriment of the nation's dental and general health. Many persistent efforts have been made to educate both young and old in matters of dental health. Unhappily these attempts have mostly produced results far below expectation. Believing that this is so because the propaganda was based only upon educational lines which were little more than dental technical instruction simplified for lay audiences - a dull programme at best - believing the failure to lie in the lack of imagination employed, I have produced this book. In an age when sensationalism in news and propaganda is current, nay, expected, and when only the dramatic seems to have any moving appeal, I have resorted to a rather more disturbing form of instruction. It is because I am convinced that most of us can only be induced to take preventive measures when stimulated by fear - fear for our safety and comfort - that this volume takes its present form. Through it I trust that the people of this nation, whose dental condition is so deplorable, will appreciate the necessity of employing the national dental service intelligently and with foresight. For if they do not, the efforts of its inaugurators will be abortive. Faithfully yours, Edward Samson." (Book ref. 129134 )  £ 25.00
