Penny Dreadful in original wrappers. A tale of a muderous highwayman printed in double columns and with 18 illustrations by Henry Anelay [1817-1883]. First published in 1839 COPAC gives this edition as 1884. Octavo.124 pps.plus six pages of advertising. Some restoration but in very nice order. The first leaf bears the oval stamp of the celebrated Indian Bookseller and publisher of Rudyard Kipling. A.H.Wheeler & Co "Price 8 Annas" Reynolds was an English novelist and Chartist leader ; Editor of the London Journal [1846] who started Reynold's Miscellany [1846] and Reynold's Weekly Newspaper (1850) Virtually forgotten now, his exposure of Victorian poverty and criminality predates Mayhew's better known accounts. In his lifetime he was more read than Dickens or Thackeray and in his obituary " The Bookseller " called him the most popular writer of our times" . Further details on request.
