The first edition, published in 1666, was mostly destroyed in the great fire of London - see Pepys' diary "[15th April 1667: purchased] 'Dugdale’s History of the Inns of Court,' of which there was but a few saved out of the fire". Attractively bound in recent panelled calf with raised bands, contrasting labels and gilt decoration. Folio, pp., [viii] 336 [iv] 116 [iii] + errata + 6 plates (three by Hollar). Title page in red and black with Imprimatur facing, full-page illustrations of coats of arms included in pagination. A few notes to the margins in a neat hand otherwise the contents are very clean and tight. Overall an excellent copy of Dugdales important legal history.
