Select Committee, Report from the Select Committee on the Survey and Valuation of Ireland

[Select Committee]: Report from the Select Committee on the Survey and Valuation of Ireland. , [London]: The House of Commons ... 21 June 1824. FIRST EDITION.

14 inches x 9 inches (36 cms x 22 cms). 383 pages (Report, Minutes of Evidence, Appendixes). The survey "has been looked to by the people of Ireland as a remedy for the inequalities of the present mode of apportioning the Taxation levied under the authority of Grand Juries and Vestries" [from the introduction to the Report]. Crisp and virtually untouched throughout with but a little foxing on about 10 of the 383 pages. Recased in early polished cloth, new calf spine and corners. The title page has a single small library stamp "Reserve stock" on the title page, and the untrimmed edges are a little dusty, otherwise in fine condition. Overall, this is probably the nicest example that will ever come onto the market. This substantial work contains a wealth of research material on Ireland including a description of the land, acreages, taxes, and the like for hundreds of parishes and townships throughout Ireland in preparation for extensive mapping of the country which was later to take place. The report was prepared and published some 20 years prior to the disastrous Irish Famine of 1846-50 which spurred new waves of emigration to North America. This title is extremely rare and difficult to obtain with only Cambridge University Library and the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland listedas having a copy. This is perhaps unsurprising as Thomas Connolly, bookseller of 10 Upper Ormond Street, Dublin, in his extensive and authoritative catalogue of Irish books issued in about 1865, only some 40 years after this work's publication, was already emphasising it as being "SCARCE", a description he did not throw about lightly. (Price includes postage UK) (Book ref. as-1823 )  £ 1150.00
