LINCOLN, William Alexander The Art and Practice of Marquetry
London: Thames & Hudson, 1980. Illustrated by B/w Illustrations / Photographs. Paperback. Fine. 8vo 0500271852 MARQUETRY- the assembly of many rare and exotic wood veneers to form a picture or decorative pattern - is a craft as old as civilized man. Its current revival is largely due to the indefatigable efforts of one man - William Lincoln. He `re-discovered' marquetry by accident when in business producing expendables from veneer. He has also headed an organization with a world-wide trade in marquetry materials, has been President of the Marquetry Society, and is himself a skilled marquetarian. Technical manuals in this field are few, for the craft was once veiled in secrecy by the trade guilds. Many of the methods of the masters died with them and have been re-developed by trial and error. In this book the author describes the various techniques used in different parts of the world, and discusses every aspect of the design, creation, cutting, laying and polishing, shading and mounting of marquetry pictures. Forty-eight pages of illustrations show a selection of the world's finest traditional marquetry furniture, as well as many of the masterpieces of modern craftsmen from all over the world. In addition are:: o An attractive design for a marquetry picture - `Cornish Coast' - and complete, detailed instructions for making it: first step to a lifelong hobby. o A detailed list of I so marquetry veneers and burrs, with full details of hue, texture, hardness, etc., and special effects for which they are suitable. o A list of veneers grouped by colour, to aid selection. o A chapter on the related techniques of intarsia, with many ideas for decoration in wood, metal, plastics, wire, mosaics, etc. o Hints on the repair and restoration of antique furniture, particularly marquetry furniture. o Specialist know-how on polishing and re-finishing procedures, with a detailed `diagnostic' table of types of damage and how to repair them. With 99 line drawings by Andrew W. J. Lincoln and 75 black and white illustrations `Everything that anyone might want to know about marquetry is here' - THE MARQUETARIAN 'Remarkably comprehensive and detailed' - IDEAL HOME MAGAZINE (Book ref. 122416)

Lge 8vo Dust jacket a little loss to top of spine. No ownership inscription. 320 pages clean and tight. Impressiionism is so much a French movement that it should be no surprise that the galleries of the Louvre at the Jeu de Paume contain such a superb collection of this school. The surprise comes when we see that the walls of the gallery are rich with the sunlight of the Impressionist world, the gaiety of picnics by the river, of cornfields and the glistening cobbles of city streets. To enter the galleries is to go from light into light, luminous, vibrating with an eternal summer. M.Bazin has selected the finest of the treasures for our delight, to inspire us to make a visit, to give us a key to this sunlit art. His text, as is only to be expected from the distinguished Conservateur-en-Chef of theLouvre, is lucid, free from art-jargon and remarkably informative. A superb introduction to the Jeu dePaume and to Impressionism itself. (Book ref. 122063)

Smith, Bradley Erotic Art of the Masters. The 18th. 19th. & 20th. Centuries
New York: Fleetbooks. Illustrated by 163 Illustrations, Plates, Drawings, Paintings. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 4to 0517542366 Heavy book but will be posted within UK for default charge. Dust jacket in nearly new condition. Maroon hard cover with bright gilt titling on spine. Decorated end papers. No ownership inscription. Preliminary essay by Henry Miller. There are 140 pages reproduced in full color and a total of 224 pages. Here, for the first time, is a gallery of the most important erotic paintings of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The most skillful and creative painters in every era have produced this type of living art. The masters of each era have reflected individual characteristics, but erotic art has never become dated or out of fashion. The visual stimulation of seeing sexual relations between people transcends the traditional forms of painting and sculpture. In each age the artist has clearly stated: "This is life. This is a part of romance, of maturity, of pleasure, of love." Because this book is a visual study of the sexual history of the human race, similar in some ways to Sir Kenneth Clark's recent history of Civilization, relationships in erotic art and behavior among divergent cultures have been searched out and compared. Most of this vital and liberating art has been kept in darkness by the censors, the powerful controllers of what humans have been allowed to view. Many of the greatest works have been revealed only to a few-to the very wealthy, to the curators of museums, to the clergy, to close friends of the artist. For the first time this rich storehouse of great art by the world's most famous artists is being opened.to the general public. The works have been newly photographed in color, using the most modern techniques to insure accuracy in reproduction. The quest for the erotic art of the masters has taken BRADLEY SMITH, photographer and author, to the great museums of the world-the Louvre, the Museum of Modern Art, the Petit Palais of Geneva, and many others. Artworks from private collections have also been reproduced. New finds, such as an important, never-before-published erotic etching by Degas, are shown. Works by famous artists of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries-Francois Boucher, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Paul Gauguin, Thomas Rowlandson, Honore Daumier, >rdouard, Manet, Gustave Courbet, Jean Francois Millet, Aubrey Beardsley, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Constantin Guys, the young Picasso of the 19th century and the older Picasso of the 20th-are included in this book. But this is only a brief list of the distinguished painters whose erotic works are reproduced here. Also included are Degas, Pascin, Hokusai, Utamaro, Haronobu, Chagall, Andre Masson, Paul Delvaux, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali and George Grosz. The woman painter of erotica, Clara Tice, has not been neglected. New works appear by such outstanding contemporary artists as Tom Wesselmann, Allen Jones, Andy Warhol, Roland Bourigeaud, John de Andrea, George Segal, Larry Rivers, and indeed the most highly regarded-artists of our time. Gilliver, C.M. The Roman Art of War
Stroud, UK: Tempus Publishing Ltd, 1999. Illustrated by 57 Illustrations, Plates. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Sm 4to 0752414224 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Black cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Previous owner's details on f. paste down. 192 pages clean and tight. The Roman army is recognised as one of the most effective fighting machines that the world has ever seen. However, the senior officer corps of the Roman army was essentially amateur, made up of aristocratic men pursuing political careers. What then was the secret of the Romans' success? According to the Greek historian Polybius, the successful general relied on personal experience, on the example of past generals and on textbooks. Since the latter offered a significant contribution to the training of Roman commanders, Kate Gilliver provides the first comprehensive study of military theory - as well as practice - in the late Republic and early Empire. She draws not just on the ancient textbooks (in particular Frontinus' Stratagems and Vegetius' Epitome), but makes use of other contemporary literary evidence (by non-Romans such as the Jewish writer Josephus as well as by Romans) and on the wealth of archaeological evidence for military activity. In five central chapters Dr Gilliver looks in detail at all aspects of the Roman army: at its organisation, the order of march, temporary encampments, pitched battles and siege warfare. These chapters reveal the army's very flexible organisation and skills, as well as its discipline. A mediocre general could get by with essential published knowledge and with the advice and experience of his officers; the great general, as the first-century Greek writer Onasander implies and as Julius Caesar was very aware, would know when to move beyond the recommendations of textbooks and trust to his own imagination and inspiration. The book also contains a fine range of illustrations, an Appendix of all the key Roman military treatises, a translation of Arrian's Order of March against the Alans and a full Glossary of key technical terms. The complete work will command a wide international readership, particularly among military historians, archaeologists and wargamers. (Book ref. 121231)
