Wicks, Ben The Day They Took the Children. Illustrated Personal Memories of Britain's 3,500,000 Evacuees
London: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 1989. Illustrated by Numerous Photographs. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Sm 4to 0747504938 Dust jacket complete but price clipped. Original cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Ownership inscription on ffep. 175 pages clean and tight. On 1 September 1988, to celebrate the launch of Ben Wicks's previous book, No Time to Wave Goodbye, hundreds of men and women travelled the length and breadth of the country to converge on London's Marylebone Station. It was a nostalgic reunion. Nearly fifty years before, as children, following the outbreak of World War 11 they had lined up on railway platforms all over Britain, waiting to be evacuated . from bomb-threatened cities to the safety of.the countryside. Their experiences as evacuees - sometimes traumatic, some-, times happy, but always unforgettable - had now been published so that others might read them. And they did. The book instantly became a bestseller. The author was inundated with thousands of letters, many from ex-evacuees, who on reading the book had laughed and wept as they relived something of their own past. They thanked-him from the bottom of their hearts - and they begged for more. Ben Wicks's response was to compile The Day They Took the Children. Like his previous book, it is a collection of memories of evacuation, written in the evacuees' own words - funny, sad, and always moving. This new volume, in addition, is richly and poignantly illustrated with some 200 photographs and other personal mementoes, many of them sent to the author by the evacuees themselves. A treasure trove of recollections that will elicit both laughter and tears, The Day They Took the Children is a book that is impossible not to pick up - and impossible to put down.
