Pascal, Janet B. Arthur Conan Doyle: Beyond Baker Street (Oxford Portraits Series)
New York / London: Oxford University Press, 2000. Illustrated by Photographs / Plates. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good +/No DJ. 8vo 0195122623 Illustrated covers. No ownership inscription Frontis portrait plate. 160 pages clean and tight. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is known around the world for his Sherlock Holmes stories and novels. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Conan Doyle earned his medical degree at Edinburgh University and entered family practice. He began writing to supplement his income and to fill the empty hours at his office. With the success of his Sherlock Holmes short stories, Conan Doyle was able to give up medicine for a full-time writing career. Surprisingly, the author considered the Sherlock Holmes stories an insignificant part of his literary output. He expected to be remembered for his historical fiction, especially the critically acclaimed The White Company. He also wrote several science-fiction novels featuring Professor Challenger, including The Lost World and The Poison Belt. In 1902 he was knighted for his book defending England's actions during the Boer War, in which the author served as a physician in a field hospital. Conan Doyle's adventures included working on a whaling ship in the Arctic, crossing the desert by camel as a war correspondent in Africa, introducing skis to the Alps, and competing in a road race against German officers just before World War I. He applied Sherlock Holmes's deduction techniques to help solve real crimes and mysteries, and once fought to save a wrongly accused man facing the gallows. Janet Pascal considers the overlaps between the fictional duo of Holmes and Dr. Watson and their creator, and draws a memorable picture of late Victorian society. OXFORD PORTRAITS are informative and insightful biographies of people whose lives shaped their times and continue to influence ours. Based on the most recent scholarship, they draw heavily on primary sources, including writings by and about their subjects. Each book is illustrated with a wealth of photographs, documents, and memorabilia, framing the personality and achievements of its subject against the backdrop of history. (Book ref. 122009)

Conrad, John P. Crime and its Correction
University California Press, 1965. Hard Cover. Very Good/Poor. 4to Dust jacket large pieces missing, 1/3rd of spine missing. Dusty red cloth with bright titles on spine. 312 pages. Do our "correctional institutions" really correct? Or do they only harden criminal tendencies? What can be done -to reduce the great human and ecOnomic cost of penal institutions, and at the same time assure society that the correctional measures taken will effectively benefit the particular individuals involved? John P. Conrad sought an answer to these questions in Russia, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, and various parts of the United States, where he visited prisons, probation agencies, criminal and juvenile courts, and criminological institutes. A colleague, Dr. Clyde E. Sullivan, made similar investigations in Germany, France, Italy and other parts of the United States. Between them they recorded over 1,400 pages of interviews with criminologists, correctional and probation officers, social workers, behavioral scientists, inmates and probationers. The resulting book is a realistic account of current correctional practices in Europe and the United States as well as an expression of ideas about needed reforms. Conrad reports that the basic correctional process, aimed at firm but humane execution of the law, is remarkably similar in the countries studied. However, advanced practices, based on the findings of behavioral science and aimed at effecting changes of behavior, are found in relatively few institutions. And when they are used, they seem related to the pressure of numbers on a system. This study was sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Crime and Delinquency of Sacramento, California, and financed by the Ford Foundation. MR. CONRAD has been with the California Department of Corrections and Youth Authority for eighteen years as a parole officer, institutional administrator, departmental administrator and chief of research. He holds degrees from the University of California and the University of Chicago, and has been a senior Fulbright Fellow at the London School of Economics. (Book ref. 110166)
