Coleman, Anne The Creative Sewing Machine
London: B. T. Batsford, 1979. Illustrated by 208 Line Drawings, 54 Photographs, 4 Colour Plates. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Sm 4to 0713433094 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Brown cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. 120 pages clean and tight. At a time when the words machine-made' are thought synonymous with loss of creativity and quality, it is refreshing to find that this book clearly shows that this need not be the case. Anne Coleman demonstrates to the reader that anyone who can operate a sewing machine in a straight line, can, once the basic techniques are mastered, move on to an infinite variety of beautiful and creative work. The book is ideally suited to anyone with a creative urge, but without the time for elaborate hand-embroidery; or, for the embroiderer wishing to acquire the skill and variety afforded by machine work. It is equally suitable for the home economics teacher, enabling her to offer an exciting extension to needlework classes, whilst at the same time increasing the pupil's dexterity with, and appreciation of, the sewing machine. By means of clear, detailed instructions and illustrations, the potential of the sewing machine is demonstrated. Guidance is given for the creation of simple patterns and designs. How to create texture by combining fabrics and materials is explained; as is the use of straight, zigzag and free machining, to make motifs and pictures for a variety of decorative uses. Anne Coleman appreciates the misgivings of those who do not feel they are naturally artistic. Consequently, she takes great pains to explain how the simplest of concepts can be transformed into a beautiful design, or picture, with a clever combination of imagination, materials and colour. Besides showing that the sewing machine can be made to produce high quality, artistic work, through this book the reader is brought into contact with a creative skill, which, by its use of left-over material, thread, net, wire, etc, is extremely inexpensive. 208 line drawings 54 photographs 4 colour plates (Book ref. 122102)   £4.00

Paston-Williams, Sara Beatrix Potter's Country Cooking
London: Frederick Warne Publishers Ltd, 1991. Illustrated by Photographs By Ian O'Leary. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to 0723236437 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Illustrated laminated boards. No ownership inscription.176 pages, colour photographs, drawings, clean and tight. Beatrix Potter's writing - in her children's books, her own journal and her letters - show that she was always interested in food. One of the pleasures and entertainments of her life after her marriage in 1913 was learning to cook. As a child and young woman she had lived in an age of servants and had never before had a chance to experiment herself. Her personal taste was always for the simple delights of country fare - new milk, fresh eggs, home-baked bread. Holidays in Scotland had introduced her to game and fish, and in later life when she moved from London to the English Lake District she reared her own lambs, cooked the trout and the salmon her husband Willie caught and grew her own fruit and vegetables. This cookery book was inspired by the works of Beatrix Potter and her love of traditional British cooking. Author Sara Paston-Williams, who specializes in researching recipes of earlier periods and creating delicious dishes from natural country ingredients, is a great admirer of Beatrix Potter. While doing research for the book she visited the area of the Lake District where Beatrix Potter lived. She talked to professional cooks working in the region and met residents who still remembered Beatrix Potter or who have heard their parents' memories of her. Their reminiscences, as well as the traditional recipes they supplied, add to the charm of this book. Many of the photographs by Ian O'Leary were taken on location, showing the regional dishes produced in their own surroundings by the cooks who are promoting them. Beatrix Potter's little books famously celebrate the pleasures of country life. This cookery book reflects her enthusiasm for one most important feature of country living - the enjoyment of appetizing and wholesome food. (Book ref. 122084)   £4.00

Dudden, Faye E. Serving Women: Household Service in Nineteenth-Century America
Middletown, Connecticut, USA: Wesleyan University Press, 1983. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8vo 0819550728 Dust jacket, small tears, rubbed to edges, unclipped. maroon cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. 344 pages clean and tight. Domestic service employed more women in nineteenth-century America than any other occupation, dwarfing even factory and needlework. Was is a route to upward mobility or another domain of subservience? Through letters, diaries, women's magazines, memoirs, and literature, Faye Dudden explores the relationships between woman-as-employer and woman-as-servant-separate sphere within separate sphere-the dynamics of privilege and deprivation, supervision and submission; the practical bases of the culture of domesticity. She documents a shift from early and rural household hired girl or "help," who shared the family's life, to urban "domestic," who was stranger and menial. The shift reflected the growing class hostility stimulated by industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. Serving Women re-creates the conditions of service: the lack of privacy and control of one's free time, the arduous and lonely labor, the isolation. from family and home life, the descent of a number into crime or prostitution, the special difficulties of widows, blacks, and of persons with physical handicap for whom housework was an occupation of last resort.
