Bass, Howard The Magic of Ski-ing
London: Stanley Paul & Co, 1959. Illustrated by Photographs, Illustrations. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fair to Good. 8vo Dust jacket slightly rubbed to edges, chunk missing from back, unclipped price on flap. Red cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. 143 pages clean and tight. THE Ski Club of Great Britain boasts more than sixteen thousand members. Even this represents only a proportion of the nation's present-day ski-ing enthusiasts. With costs each year increasingly more competitive and economical, this healthy, exhilarating pastime is no longer the prerogative of the wealthy, and countless additional holidaymakers now enjoy ski-ing for pleasure. Offering most useful encouragement to those seeking more information before 'having a go' themselves, here is practical advice on clothing, equipment, travel, resorts and accommodation as well as an explanation of elementary technique, with particular emphasis on the special coaching courses organized by the Central Council of Physical Recreation. As a beneficial work of reference, it fills a long-standing gap in the sports library and should contribute greatly to a nation's ski-mindedness. Howard Bass is the Editor of The Skater and Skier. Steele, Peter Medical Handbook for Mountaineers (Guides)
London: Constable, 1988. Illustrated by Illustrated. New Enlarged Edition. Laminated Soft Cover. Very Good. 12mo 0094685703 Small name on f.paste down. 248 pages clean and tight. A book written for the active mountaineer and climber to help him or her in times of emergency. The author provides first-aid information to cover all the eventualities a mountaineer is likely to be confronted with at least once in a lifetime. Dr Steele is concerned as much with the teacher taking a party of children across the British moors as with a young doctor climbing in the Himalayas. In the mountains the climber is often far from help with few resources and scant medical knowledge. The author tables suggestions for necessary equipment and drugs and then goes on to describe various conditions and how best to treat them; from irritating blisters and nosebleeds to broken limbs, hypothermia and pulmonary oedema. Complex medical detail and that superfluous to on-thespot aid is retained in small print. The Medical handbook for mountaineers was originally published in 1976. In this new pocket-size book the author has rewritten and expanded the text to take account of the latest medical developments and to include some material on more serious conditions. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. 96 pages clean and tight. Instead, it represents the latest thought in skiing technique profiting by the various contributions of the Swiss, French, Austrian and Norwegian champions and teachers. From the first exercises in downhill running, through the intermediate steps and the final analysis of each of the motions that combine intofluid and powerful advanced skiing, each section is carefully planned to develop positivelythe timing and rhythm needed for high speed skiing. It presents the auxiliaries of the skier's repertoire-jump turns, skating steps, etc. and concludes with an analysis of some of the most common errors in ski technique, showing the unfortunate effects of such errors. Fingleton, Jack Four Chukkas to Australia : The 1958 - 59 M.C.C. Tour of Australia ( Cricket )
London: William Heinemann, 1960. Illustrated by Photographs. First Ediition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo Dust jacket slightly rubbed and chipped to edges, tiny closed tears, price clipped. Green cloth with silver titling on spine, slight wear to edges. No ownership inscription. 179 pages, Appendix Tour statistics, score sheets. Clean and tight. PETER MAY sailed from England in September, 1958, with what looked-on paper, at least-to be one of the strongest teams ever to represent England abroad. Indeed, some critics claimed that this team could well have played the Rest of the World and beaten them! But May's team did not win a single Test. In the biggest upset of modern cricket times, Australia, under the energetic Benaud, won four Tests and drew the other. What went wrong? The greatest army of pressmen and former players in the history of the game came to write the story of the tour, but the welter of opinions served only to confuse and confound. Was the umpiring as bad as some said? Was Australia's success due to alleged "chucking"? All these allegations, and more, were made by English writers with the team. Here, now, is the story as seen through the eyes of Jack Fingleton, acclaimed as Australia's outstanding writer on cricket. He wrote on the tour for leading newspapers in Commonwealth countries. A Test player himself (he was the first ever to make four successive Test centuries), and a professional journalist, Fingleton writes with authority; his opinions on these contentious matters show them in a fresh, clarifying perspective. English lovers of the game have long known his articles in the London Sunday Times and by his appearances on television for the B.B.C. he is known to millions for his informative and witty comments. Fingleton not only traces the highlights and the background of this 1958-59 M.C.C. tour of Australia. He draws a clearyicture of the lessons the tour taught-and these lessons cannot be ignored if Test cricket is to retain its popularity in so many countries in the world. This is Fingleton's sixth book on cricket-all of them have been best sellers. (Book ref. 121787)   £6.50

PERRY, Roland The Don : Based on Interviews with Cricket Legend Sir Donald Bradman
London: Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd, 1996. Illustrated by Photographs. First Edition, First Impression. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Lge 8vo 0283062894 Wrapper has been price clipped. 645 pages clean and tight. The Don is the first in-depth biography of Sir Donald Bradman, considered by many - including every Australian prime minister from Billy Hughes to Paul Keating - to be the greatest Australian ever born. Based on exclusive interviews with Bradman, it covers every aspect of his cricket career, a career in which he became the most talented competitor ever to grace a sporting field. He became a legend before he was a man, and his status grew through his deeds and character even during retirement. But what is myth and what is real? What motivated Bradman to be the best, to break every cricket record and win every possible competition for his country? Who were his real enemies and finest adversaries? What were the facts behind crises such as Bodyline, a method of attack designed to destroy Bradman? How did he cope with unprecedented public adulation in Australia and the UK, when others could not? Roland Perry has written a vivid and illuminating book which reaches to the heart of the true Bradman character. Including much biographical information never before published, the book traces the untold story of Bradman's early years and largely ignored early batting achievements and brings to life with mood and detail every major performance including his eighty Test innings. The page-turning narrative and meticulous research give a complete portrait of an exceptional life. (Book ref. 121748)   £14.95

Birkett, Sir Norman The Game of Cricket
London: B T Batsford Ltd, 1955. Illustrated by Diana Rait Kerr: 34 Illustrations, 17 in Colour. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to Dust jacket complete, unclipped, chipped, slight wear to edges. Green cloth with gilt titling on spine. Small marks on cover. No ownership inscription. A few foxing spots.144pp, 17 colour and 17 b/w illustrations. Notes on the illustrations by Diana Rait Kerr. HE Game of Cricket has as long a lineage, and has been as widely celebrated both by writers and by artists, as any the world has known. For cricket, with its traditions, its ritual and its subtlety, is outstandingly a connoisseur's game. To foreigners it is incomprehensible, but to its devotees, whether Indian, Australian, South African, West Indian or English, it inspires an affection which continues long after active playing days are over. Sir Norman Birkett is known as one of cricket's most discriminating enthusiasts. In this book he has written an account of the game which is compounded equally of his own experience as a player and as a spectator, and of his knowledge of cricketing history. To Sir Norman Birkett's essay has been added as fine a collection of historic cricket pictures as have ever illustrated a book on the game. In date these illustrations range from the eighteenth-century pictures of Paul Sandby and Francis Hayman to a contemporary painting of Lord's by Charles Cundall. Some 17 are reproduced in colour and among them are the cream of the collection of the late Sir Jeremiah Colman. Miss Diana Rait Kerr, Librarian to the M.C.C., has been actively en-. gaged both in the selection of these illustrations and in writing the notes on them which are printed in this book. Here, it will be generally agreed, is an addition of permanent value to the long and illustrious literature of the Game of Cricket. (Book ref. 121708)   £12.00

SINCE the first edition of this book was produced two years ago popular interest in the sport has increased by leaps and bounds. We have endeavoured to keep pace with the times, and the present volume is an attempt to, give a really complete account of the sport, which will be useful to beginners and experts alike. To the historical part has, been added a chapter on Continental ski-running, whilst the technical part has been remodelled, enlarged, and, we trust, rendered more lucid and complete. Wherever necessary new diagrams have been added, and the whole-page illustrations have been chosen with a view to, indicating the great beauty and variety of the snow regions of the earth. Here and there actual alterations of views previously expressed will be found. We make no, apology for these, but desire frankly to acknowledge our errors, and to thank those friendly critics who have pointed them out. With ignorant criticism we have been very little troubled, and with actual hostility simply not at all. We are further greatly indebted to the many friends who have rendered us positive assistance. The frontispiece is from Herr Halstrom's wonderful picture " Paa Skare," which that gentleman has given us unqualified leave to reproduce. They ski-runner which it depicts also serves as a central figure for the cover, designed by Mr. Nice Jungman. To those who have kindly permitted us to copy their photographs we hereby take the opportunity of expressing our best thanks. The outline of the Solberg Hill is from an accurate drawing by Herr Von de Beauclair published in Ski, to the editor of which paper we are also indebted for the drawings illustrating Herr Sohm's detachable seal's-skin and climbing-irons. To Herr S. Hoyer-Ellefsen, Herr Fredrik Juell, Herr Trygve Smith, Herr Durban Hansen, and numerous other skilful Norwegian runners we are grateful for many a useful hint and word of advice, whilst we owe to Herr Zdarsky a valuable practical demonstration of his methods of teaching. Messrs. C. W. Richardson, E. H. Wroughton, and H. P. Cox have been kind enough to help with the actual production of the little work, and if there be any others who we have omitted to mention we would hereby beg them to accept at once both our apologies and thanks. E.C.R. November, 1905." (Book ref. 121512)   £275.00
