[London] 1780. Folio, 490 X 345mm., pp. [4], engr. index map, 13 engr. maps, hand-coloured in outline, mostly double-page, cont. mottled calf, rebacked and with corners repaired, some minor stains in extreme upper margin of a couple of maps outside the main image area. [An interesting atlas. James Rennell (1742 - 1830), conducted the surveys for these maps while in the service of the East India Company. A manuscript atlas of the results was sent to England in 1774. Ill health led to Rennell taking up residence in England in 1778 when 'he proposed a new set of maps of Bengal to replace the inadequate small scale maps published by the East India Company from his earlier surveys, and, with the guarantee of a bulk order from the company, had plates engraved to publish A Bengal Atlas first in 1780. The bulk consignment, en route for India for the use of company officials, was captured at sea by French and Spanish ships and Rennell produced a new enlarged Atlas, with river maps and tables of distances in 1781. A Bengal Atlas remained the standard administrative map of Bengal of almost fifty years...' DNB. From this it would appear that our copy is one from the original printing and survived due to remaining in Britain. This folio edition would be appear to be of considerable rarity. ESTC online lists two copies with a date of 1780, one at the British Library, and one at Yale. Both of these are listed as quarto with 8 preliminary pages. Our copy has 4 preliminary pages. The British Library had kindly informed me that their copy is definitely a true quarto with horizontal chain lines, and that pages 5 to 8 contain the area and contents information that is present in our pages 3 to 4. The British Library copy has an advert. leaf not present in the folio copy. The only other folio copy we can trace was the Wardington copy sold at Sotheby's in 2006 for £3000.] (Book ref. 13879)

London: Bailliere, Tindall & Cox..., [1893-1898]. Folio, parts 1 -15 in orig. printed wrappers, 60 chromolitho. plates, letterpress descriptions, some expert archival paper repairs to some margins of text and a few plates (not affecting images), all loose in a specially made protective box, with fold over inner cover bearing the title in gilt, silk tie, and outer spine with green leather title label. [This would appear to be the complete edition in English. The German work ran to 26 parts but the most complete we can find the work in the English translation is in 15 parts. The Wellcome copy has 12 parts. Oxford and the British Library have 15 parts. The German and French editions each have 104 plates. Our copy advertises in the first part that there will be 12 parts with 4 plates each. Parts 13-15 announce that they form the second series and will be issued in 18 parts, again with 4 plates to each part. Plate lists for the complete work are present in two wrappers. These list 173 plates but indicate with an asterisk the ones already published, and these amount to 58. Our copy has four plates to each part but part five lists a plate C1 which is not present (not published), although the full complement of four plates is present. [These are plates C2, C3, C4, C5] The letterpress listing of the plates sometimes gives plate numbers for images which are included with other numbered plates on the one sheet. By this system we have 87 called for numbered 'plates' on 60 sheets. On the other hand some plates have two or more images which are encompassed within a single numbered plate. There is a printed sheet with part 13 'Preface to Second Series' with a discussion of the work in three sections. The first is by Kast & Rumpel dated June 1896 in which they point out that the completion of the work depends on 'the interest which is shown in wider medical circles.' The next two sections are testimonials from Rudolph Virchow and Dr. Ernest Ziegler. This is the complete English translation. The National Library of Scotland, Oxford Sience Library, and Cambridge University Library have examined their copies and have kindly confirmed that their copies collate the same as ours.] (Book ref. 14474)
