Spine is faded and there is a short repair to a short, (8cm), split in front outer hinge. London. S.T. Freemantle. 1st thus. 1900. 2 VOLUMES. Hardback. Large 8vo, 23x16 cms. Vol. 1;- Pp.,xxiv,427. Tinted portrait frontis, 48 b/w plates, folding facsimile letter, head and tail illustrations to chapters, map. Vol. 2;- Pp.,xv,443. Portrait frontis, 47 b/w plates, (one being double page), folding facsimile letter, head and tail pieces. The plates in Vol 1 are all with tissue guards. Only the frontis in Vol. 2 has a guard. An "Errata" is printed at the end of Vol. 2. Publishers green cloth on bevelled boards, with gilt titles on spines. Small coats of arms, of the White family, in gilt, on front covers. Top edges gilt and other edges uncut. Age spotting to the uncut edges. Browning to end papers. Some occassional, sporadic foxing to a few pages, mainly to margins. Pages generally clean and bright. Marginal spots to frontis of Vol 2, else all plates clean. Bindings sound and tight. Covers sound and corners square. One minor tear, (quarter inch), to top of spine of Vol. 1. Very attractive set, hardly used, and in FINE condition, if foxing is excused. - .##. - The engravings by Keuleman, of birds mainly, though with a few animals, are quite superb. Railton provided illustrations of scenes and views for numerous publications, and those here, of Selborne and area, are to his usual high standard. Sullivan provided the entertaining and sharply observed illustrations related to episodes in the diaries. A highly collectable edition of "Selborne". Any foxing of the paper is regretable, but is a feature of this Freemantle edition, and is not too onerous in this particular set, with the plates being largely quite free. - .##. - Heavy pair of volumes.
