London. Williams and Norgate. 1906, 1902, 1897. 3 thick 8vo volumes. Pp.; Vol 1, (1906), xii,883; Vol 2, x,706; Vol 3, (1897), viii,635. All in publishers red cloth with gilt titles on spine. Covers with rules and decoration in blind, and with gilt title and decoration on front cover, (incorporating facets of the natural world, as crystals, plant and butterfly). The fore and lower edges are trimmed, and the upper edges are uncut, with more than 90% of the pages remaining unopened. A few pages only have been rather roughly opened. Dusting to top edges. Pages with some occasional light spotting, mainly to the upper margins of some pages in Vol 3, but quite sparse overall. Sound bindings and covers. Some light shelf rub to extremities, and the odd scuff and mark. An attractive set, and in VG condition. - .##. - Spenser was the "Father of Social Darwinism", and though much of his historical background was sound enough many of his conclusions are no longer valid. These 3 volumes are in effect the definitive expression of his views. There have been corrections and enlargement over the years, and parts of some of the volumes were issued before completion of the whole volume. Vol.1 is the "fifth thousand" of the 1885, 3rd edition. Vol.2 is the "fourth thousand" of the 1882 completed edition, Vol.3 is the "second thousand" of the 1896 edition. - .##. - Heavy item, and will require extra charges outside of UK.
